NASA says these asteroids hold clues to the origin of the solar system

In a new video posted to its official YouTube channel, NASA explained how important Trojan asteroids are to understanding the formation of our solar system.

The new video was released as part of the “We asked a NASA scientist“series that answers some of the most burning scientific questions. The question posed in this specific video is”What are Trojan asteroids?“, and it was answered by Audrey Martin, NASA asteroid expert, who says that billions of years ago the solar system consisted only of small, rocky and icy objects that finally came together to form the planets we see today.

However, not all of the earliest objects in the solar system were used to form the planets, as some of them are described as “blank asteroids“which now orbit in the same orbital plane as Jupiter. These asteroids orbit in two massive swarms on either side of Jupiter and are called Trojan asteroids. Martin says these asteroids are mysterious and could have originated outside of our solar system.

Additionally, Martin says research on these asteroids will give scientists a better understanding of how planets evolved as well as how our solar system evolved.
